The term 'Action Art' or 'Action Painting' was coined initially by Harold Rosenberg, one of the most vocal proponents of the Abstract Expressionist movement.

ACTION ART
This term, first coined by Harold Rosenberg, refers to the dribbling, splashing or otherwise unconventional techniques of applying paint to a canvas.

"Action Art" took this a step further, using Freud's ideas of the subconscious as its underling foundations. The paintings of the Action Artists were not meant to portray any objects whatsoever and likewise were not meant to stimulate emotion.
