alkyd resins - Synthetic resins used in better-quality industrial house paints, enamels, and varnishes for over sixty years. In artists' materials, they have proven promising particularly as ingredients in oil paints.

Alkyd: Synthetic resin used in the manufacturing of paints and varnishes. An alkyd is a mixture of alcohol and acid and must be thinned with solvent or paint thinner. Alykds dry faster than oils but not as fast as acrylic paints.

Alkyd Resins
Sold under a variety of names that may or may not contain the word alkyd, these mediums are synthetic resins that are excellent for oil painting because they dry quickly.

Liquin is an alkyd medium used in oil painting that is formulated to speed up the drying rate of oil paint. It also increases gloss and flow.

Pollock has unconventionally combined alkyd (the American term for water based acrylic paint) with oil based paint onto paper. What in this case was the unintended consequence of this experimental combination of paints?

Formulated from alkyd resin, titanium dioxide, and barium sulfate, Gamblin Ground makes canvas and linen stiffer than acrylic "gesso" and more flexible than traditional oil primers. Barium sulfate gives Gamblin Ground its tooth.

And oil paints use (you guessed it!) some sort of drying oil, usually linseed or a modified oil called an alkyd. It's great, the way chemistry works in paint ... even if one (raising hand) doesn't necessarily understand chemistry.
