Biedermeier was an influential style of furniture design from Germany during the years 1815-1848, based on utilitarian principles.
Biedermeier - A style of painting, furniture, and other crafts, prominent in Germany and Austria from 1815 to 1848, popular especially among the middle classes. It was a simplified adaptation of the French Empire style, which preceded it.
THE BIEDERMEIER STYLE
Characterized by a simple, restrained classicism (the German word bieder means plain or conventional), the Biedermeier style spread through Germany, Austria, and northern European countries from 1815.
My maternal grandmother drew, painted and embroidered as did every woman of good family in the Biedermeier period: flowers and suchlike pretty things. When I was a very small child, she introduced me to the pleasures of drawing and colouring.
