Wash: A thin layer of translucent color or ink used in watercolor painting and brush drawing.

After his father's death in 1711, Cosmas Damian went to Rome, studying at the Accademia di S Luca under Carlo Maratti; he was awarded the academy's first prize for his brush drawing of the Miracle of St Pius (Rome, Accad. N. S Luca) in 1713.

The term 'wash' is used in watercolour painting, brush drawing, and occasionally in oil painting to describe a thin layer of diluted pigment or ink. Also refers to a drawing made in this technique.

Rubens (in particular his oil sketches), the brush drawings and etchings of Castiglione, the naturalism of the Dutch painters, and the fantasy of the French artist Claude Gillot all provided important source material for early Rococo painting.

Washes can be desribed as a broad layer of diluted pigment, ink or glaze used particulaly in watercolours and brush drawings, but also occasionally in oil paintings and sculpture. The wash is often used to give a starting point to a watercolour.
