Color Field painting is a style of abstract painting that emerged in New York City during the 1940s and 1950s.

The natural successor to the style Abstract Expressionism of the 1950s and 1960s, Color Field painting was especially influenced by Jackson Pollock and his technique of staining canvases with paint.
Color field paintings are defined by solid areas of color that cover the whole canvas. Artists that embraced this style were Mark Rothko (1903 - 1970), Jules Olitski (1922 -), and Kenneth Noland (1924 -).
Color Field painting, influenced by Matisse, Fauvism, and Surrealism was relatively inert and bare. Color applied to flat surfaces suggests an overall calm, meditative otherworldly place.
