A good basic composition will often either be asymetrical or will lead the viewer's eye around the work. Some standard compositional layouts are shown above.

Message the artist is trying to communicate in a work of art.
The composition of The Boating Party is, as in the most interesting of Cassatt's paintings, unconventional and arresting. The darkly clad figure of the boatman looms large in the foreground, almost appearing to project out of the canvas.
The composition, colors and dramatic use of perspective, the undulating curves of the landscape and hollow figure personify alienation and anxiety. So why is this image so popular? What is it about this yelling figure that speaks to so many of us?
The composition of a still life may seem random, as when an apple has had a bite taken out of it, but don't believe that 'randomness' for a second.
As a composition is developed an artist may stress some elements of the design over others. The eye of the viewer will focus on the area of emphasis or center of interest first, then take in the rest of the composition.

Vedder's compositions and ideas are excellent and bold. He has an interest in drapery perhaps most similar to that of Burne-Jones. Works by Vedder appear in England occasionally in loan exhibitions. His paintings are to be found in American museums.
