Degenerate Art (1933-45)
The term "degenerate art" derives from the German phrase "entartete kunst", which was coined by the Nazis to describe works of contemporary art which did not accord with their ideology and cultural outlook.

The Nazi movement, from nearly the start, denounced the Bauhaus for its "degenerate art", and the Nazi regime was determined to crack down on what it saw as the foreign, probably Jewish influences of "cosmopolitan modernism.
They were displayed in the State-sponsored exhibit "Degenerate Art" then destroyed along with works by Paul Klee, Franz Marc and other modern artists.
He was then denounced by the Nazi party for producing 'degenerate art' in 1933. In 1933 Klee returned to Switzerland and was dignosed in 1935 with scleroderma. He died in Muralto Switzerland in 1940 leaving at least 8926 works of art.

Feininger was one of the original artists who taught at the Bauhaus, until the Nazis declared that he along with all his artist friends were "degenerate artists" and slammed the doors shut in 1933.

Some years later when the Nazis came to power in Germany, Kirchner's work, along with the work of many other artists, was denounced as 'degenerate art' and confiscated. He took his own life shortly before the outbreak of World War II.
With the beginnings of WWII, however, his work was denounced (as well as his compratriots) as "degenerate art", and confiscated from museums. He became increasingly depressed by the war and took his own life.
With 650 such works, they mounted an exhibition titled Degenerate Art ("Entartete 'Kunst'"). The exhibit opened in Munich and traveled to eleven other cities in Germany and Austria.
Rather than censor modernist art, the Nazis confiscated it, and mounted exhibits of what they called "degenerate art.
In 1937 an exhibition of degenerate art, 'Entartete Kunst' contained all types of avant-garde art disapproved of by the Nazi party. Then the exodus began: not just from the Bauhaus but from Europe in general; to Paris, London and America.
