The term "degenerate art" derives from the German phrase "entartete kunst", which was coined by the Nazis to describe works of contemporary art which did not accord with their ideology and cultural outlook.

Entartete Kunst [Ger.: ‘degenerate art'].
Term used by the Nazis in Germany from the 1920s to refer to art that did not fall into line with the arts policies of National Socialism, chiefly avant-garde work.

Degenerate art is a translation of the German term Entartete Kunst used by Hitler for art that didn't fit his definition of good German art, which included most modern art.

But the Gestapo were certainly on his trail, and in summer 1937 his pictures were displayed at the infamous 'Entartete Kunst' exhibition in Munich. Clearly his return to Germany was blocked for ever.

In 1937 an exhibition of degenerate art, 'Entartete Kunst' contained all types of avant-garde art disapproved of by the Nazi party. Then the exodus began: not just from the Bauhaus but from Europe in general; to Paris, London and America.
