Gestural Painting
A general term for the work of many American Abstract Expressionists and also that of European artists working in the same vein.

Gestural painting
a term that originally came into use to describe the painting of the abstract Expressionist artists Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, Hans Hofmann and others.

Pompous tone aside, "post-painterly abstraction" incorrectly implies a sequential development in abstract art from gestural into non-gestural painting.

Or, in terms of the younger generation of American artists, a synthesis of the gestural painting of Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Franz Kline, and the color-field painting of Clyfford Still, Mark Rothko, and Barnett Newman.

Gestural composition means a type of composition based on gestural directional movements. The work of Arshile Gorky, the Abstract Expressionist, is an example of gestural painting, which often connotes a spiritual or emotional content.
