A set of duplicate prints or casts having a predetermined limit in its production. In the past editions were naturally limited since engraving and etching plates would wear until prints could no longer be made.

 


Limited Edition - In art, a limited edition is one of a sequential number of images in a published edition for which a predetermined number of impressions were from a plate or master.

Limited Edition
This is when the artist promises to not make more than a specified amount of prints. In the old days of printing the artist would destroy the plate or stone that the print was made from so no more could be made.

Limited Edition

Limited Edition - A limited number of identical prints numbered in succession and signed and supervised by the artist. Any additional prints have been destroyed.

When a limited edition is no longer available it is termed Sold Out. When an image sells out it usually will begin to appreciate in value depending upon resale or trade in the secondary market.

In the decades since, these ideas have been somewhat lost as the art market has learned to sell limited edition DVDs of video works,[18] invitations to exclusive performance art pieces, and the objects left over from conceptual pieces.

Since the late nineteenth century the number of prints produced has usually been restricted and declared as a 'limited edition'; before this prints were often produced in as many numbers as the process would allow.

When the process was eventually used by publishers and artists to produce limited editions, the longevity of the vegetable dyes was tested. The commercially used dyes used were not permanent - fading after a few years under normal lighting.

Artists Proof: A numbered print which are not part of the limited edition. Usually these prints are signed "Artist Proof" or "AP" with the generally accepted edition size not to exceed ten percent of the regular limited edition size.

A copy or reproduction that is outside the numbered copies of the limited edition but may be numbered with the prefix AP. By custom, the artist retains the A/Ps for his personal use or sale and does not put an edition number on them.
