Metaphysical Painting (ital. Pittura Metafisica) is an Italian art movement, born in 1917 with the work of Carlo Carrą and Giorgio de Chirico in Ferrara.

Metaphysical paintings are ones whose subject is architecture (classical, rather than modern) done with exaggerated or unusual perspective and imagination.

These artists are said to have been inspired by the rules of Symbolism, the Metaphysical Painting of Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico and the spontaneous, abstract style of Joan Miro, Max Ernst and Andre Masson.
