Cubism was taken up by many artists in Montparnasse and promoted by art dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, becoming popular so quickly that by 1911 critics were referring to a "cubist school" of artists.

A colony of some 100 foreign artists enabled the emergence of a unique and colourful phenomenon in the legendary territory of Montparnasse between 1910 and 1940, the School of Paris(Ecole de Paris).

He was profoundly impressed, so much so that early in 1912 he moved to Paris, where he settled in the Montparnasse district.

Spent the spring in Paris, at 132 boulevard du Montparnasse. When the Germans invaded France in May, Matisse decided to remain in the country, canceling a trip to Rio de Janeiro. He also turned down an invitation to go to Mills College in California.

Working again much of the time in Paris, he transferred his studio from Montmartre to Montparnasse in 1922 and three years later moved into a new Left Bank house designed for him by a modern-minded architect, Auguste Perret.

because at the turn of the 20th century a group of outstanding artists lived and rented artistic studios there. First artists started to settle at the Bateau-Lavoir in the 1890s but after 1914 they started to move elsewhere (mainly Montparnasse).
