Overpainting by definition must be done over some type of underpainting, in a system of working in layers. If the underpainting is like a base rhythm in music, then the overpainting is like the solo.

Overpainting: the final layer of paint that is applied over the under painting or under layer after it has dried.

In the purist sense this implies working only with transparent colours on white paper; attaining many of the colour mixes and tones by overpainting again and again; for example, yellow over blue, produces green.

It can be called a principle of archeological restoration because it obliges the restorers during their revealing of the original layer of paint to preserve, wherever possible, of various layers of overpainting.
