primer, priming...Priming a canvas, board, or other support simply means laying a ground. The paints specifically made for this purpose are sometimes called primers. The most commonly used today is acrylic gesso.

 


Not recommended for priming/initial layers or thick impasto in oil painting because of slow drying rate and tendency of the pigment to become brittle when dry (in oil paint only).

For oil-painting the wall will need to be thoroughly isolated and then given an adequate lead priming. For acrylics the surface should be treated with acrylic medium and water to consolidate the plaster.

X-ray examination reveals that the priming on all the additional pieces of canvas is identical, but differs from that of the central section of this work.

Gesso: Gesso is made from glue, gypsum and/or chalk forming the ground layer of wood paneling or the priming layer of canvas.

However, this mixture is rather brittle and susceptible to cracking, thus making it unsuitable for use on canvas.

The tempered is impregnated with oil to aid in resisting moisture. It is harder and has a smoother surface. The surface of the tempered should be sanded to roughen it before priming. Both surfaces are good for painting.
