Proofs - Prints authorized by the artist in addition to the limited signed and numbered edition. The total size of an art edition consists of the signed and numbered prints plus all outstanding proofs.

Paperboard
Any paper with a thickness (caliper) of 12 points (.3mm) or more.

Artist Proofs
Prints created by a print publisher for the artist to review and work with the publisher to make any necessary adjustments to coloring, tone, darkness, etc., before the numbered edition prints are printed.

Artist's Proofs - In offset reproductions, artist's proofs are additional prints not included in, but of the same quality as, the regular edition.

Additional proofs from a print run that are not included in the regular edition. These prints are pulled for the artist approval and for personal use. These prints are also used to extend the edition beyond the original numbered run.

In Binet's "proofs", Pirandello found scientific support for the surprising intuitions of much German romanticism on which he had probably meditated during his years spent in Germany.

The proofs taken while the artist is working on the plate, stone, etc. to check different stages of his progress are known as states; each one showing additional working constitutes a different state.

A/P - Artist Proofs Common practice is that 10 to 15 percent of an edition reserved for the artist. These proofs are identical to impressions in the edition in most instances. Example A/P 3/35 ...

Artist Proof: Additional proofs from a print run that are not included in the regular edition. These prints are pulled for the artist approval and for personal use.

He certainly studied at the university of Edinburgh, and probably received his first instruction in architecture from his father, who gave proofs of his own skill and taste in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary (now demolished).

artist's proof - One of a small group of prints set aside from an edition for an artist's use; a number of printer's proofs are sometimes also done for a printer's use.

These proofs may be designated as artist's proofs (AP, or EP in French and PA in Spanish) Print marking example; A/P 1/100 is the first print of an edition of 100 Artist Proof impressions.

(ie: an edition of 500 would have 50 artist proofs.) With modern printing, artists proofs are not better quality prints than the regular edition, however they are desirable to many serious collectors in that there are fewer signed in this way.

Proofs are signed by the artist and numbered showing the quantity of Artist's Proofs issued in the edition. Because of their highly restricted number, Artist's Proofs are sold at a higher value than the regular prints in the edition.

The artist would approve the edition based on the consistency and quality of these proofs.

Consequently, artist's proofs are no different than any other impressions within the edition. Often, there is a false belief that pieces designated as artist's proofs are it worth" more or are more "valuable" than other pieces in the edition.

Originally, artist proofs or APs were the first copies printed used to indicate the artist's approval of colour reproduction and other mechanical aspects of the printing process.

Sometimes the artist may retain the artist
proofs. As a general rule, there are 10%
more A/Ps than S/Ns when a painting is
reproduced as a numbered edition.

Edition - Number of impressions pulled by or under the supervision of the artist, usually numbered and signed, excluding artist's proofs, trial proofs, and any others outside the edition.

Edition
Number of prints made from an original. This number generally does not include any artist proofs or any special editions.
