Art provenance is the history of a painting, its creation and ownership, used to help establish its authenticity.

Provenance: The history or exact record of ownership for a work of art. The provenance of a work of art helps museum staff, curators, gallerists and auction houses determine valuation and authenticity.

Provenance
A term meaning the origins of a work of art, specifically its history of ownership since its creation.

It typically includesdescriptions, photographs, notes on provenance, collections, samples of signatures, a thorough chronology of notable events in the artist's life, and a bibliography.

Within the covers, the author details each piece's (1) provenance, (2) size, (3) current condition and external sources in which the piece has been written up. Photographs and/or scans are a heavily prominent feature.

He may be the patron of the church for which the work was commissioned (John the Baptist is a common example) or of the city of its donor (Bernardino of Siena; Mark and Nicholas of Venice) - often a clue to the painting's provenance.
