The Salon de Paris During the 19th century, the Académie des Beaux Arts was the pillar of the French artistic establishment and it held an annual open exhibition at the Salon de Paris.
In 1824 the Salon de Paris exhibited works of John Constable. His rural scenes influenced some of the younger artists of the time, moving them to abandon formalism and to draw inspiration directly from nature.
When their works were rejected for the offical Salon de Paris, Napoleon III decided to set up a new exhibition for the rejected works, called 'Salon des Refus?s' (The Salon of the Refused).
Morisot's first appearance in the Salon de Paris came at the age of twenty-three in 1864, with the acceptance of two landscape paintings. She continued to show regularly in the Salon until 1874, the year of the first impressionist exhibition.
