Gauguin painted many self-portraits, but few are as enigmatic as this one. It was among the work that Gauguin and his student Meyer Isaac de Haan created to decorate the dining room of the inn where they were staying in Le Pouldu, near Pont-Aven.

 


A self-portrait is a painting an artist has done using themself as the subject.

Self Portrait: - A self-portrait is a portrait where the artist is also the subject.

Pictures of a young generation after World War I showed nudes in peace, or heroic self-portraits and monumental landscapes.

1490-1494, travels in Germany (Colmar, Strasbourg, Basle): self-portrait (Louvre, 1493). 1494-1495, Venice (landscape watercolours, British Museum, London; Ashmolean Museum, Oxford). 1495-1506, reputation at Nuremberg as painter and engraver.

Just before their separation, Frida painted a double self-portrait. In the image on the right, she is dressed as a Mexican peasant, holding a miniature portrait of Diego.

In his self-portraits, it is easy to see the sensitive, moody artist who was tortured by mental illness and personal tragedies.

These eighteen haunting early paintings have never before been brought together in a museum show. The sculptor's death at age 34 in 1970 turned every scrap from her hand, including these macabre self-portraits, into an object of fascination.

CarrĂ 's Woman with Absinthe (1911), Severini's Self-Portrait (1912), and Boccioni's Matter (1912)), it was the urban scene and vehicles in motion that typified Futurist painting - e.g.

personality (if a person) - character, status, the place and time they lived, the environment in which they live or simply showing beauty. Artists over the years have created many portraits to express their feelings about themselves in self-portraits.
