Serigraph (Silkscreen Printing): A complex stenciling process using a fine mesh of polyester or nylon material stretched tightly across a frame. A separate screen is created for every color that exists in the original art.
The former is exemplified by acrylic painting, as well as silkscreen printing and giclee prints; the latter by the invention of mixed-media artworks employing collage, decollage, photomontage, or "found-art".
They refer to the popular culture, which also inspires Warhol to experiment with the technique of silkscreen printing, a popular technique used for mass production. In doing so, Warhol moves away from the elitist avant-garde tradition.
