Definition:
A still life is a painting featuring an arrangement of inanimate, everyday objects, whether natural objects (flowers, food, wine, etc.) or manufactured items (books, bottles, crockery, etc.).

Still Life
A still life artist is a work of art depicting inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (flowers, game, sea shells and the like) or man-made (drinking glasses, foodstuffs, pipes, books and so on).

Popular still life subject matter includes things we eat and the utensils with which we cook and eat them. Flower arrangements are high in popularity as well.

Still life was not hugely popular with the Impressionists, mainly because it was not a 'plein air' subject suited to capturing the atmospheric qualities of light and color.

Picasso, then aged 56, was not entering a premature second childhood: the sketch was one of many that served to prepare his great work "Guernica", done when he was at the height of his powers.

STILL LIFE an arrangement of fruit, flowers, food or assorted unmoving objects. The plural is "still lifes" (not "lives").
STUDY a drawing that may be used to try out an idea or plan out another work.

Still Lifes
Still life emerged as an independent genre in Russia from around 1850. Its finest exponent was Ivan Khrutsky (1810-85), who was greatly influenced by the Dutch Realist masters in the Hermitage Museum.

Still life: Any work whose subject matter is inanimate objects.
Study: A comprehensive drawing of a subject or details of a subject that can be used for reference while painting.

still life: the subject matter category in which the main purpose of the art work is to show inanimate objects.

Like the Heda still life, Patricia Hansen's "Sunflowers" creates a more or less believable illusionistic space. But the vase, rendered with meticulous precision, contrasts uneasily with the loose and luminous flowers and background.

The first collage in art was by Picasso, Still Life with Chair Caning, produced in 1912. After World War I, the Dada artists used found objects to make political statements.

George Segal’s Picasso’s Chair 1973 was a new spin on a traditional nude with still life subject, and in particular a new twist on Pablo Picasso’s cubist period.

Robert Spear Dunning and John Grouard founded the Fall River Evening Drawing School in 1870 in Fall River, Maine, a milling town. The focus was on highly realistic, "trompe l'oeil" still life painting.

Although his Dutch conservative upbringing offered little more than a focus on landscapes and still life painting, Mondrian's work evolved into a new form of radical painting, later known as the De Stijl art movement.

The long exposure time required for the waxed paper negative was useful for still lifes and landscapes as well as travel photography because it could be prepared and sensitized many days before exposure.

They also appreciated portraits, genre scenes, still lifes, and scenes from their everyday lives. Dutch art was not supported by aristocratic or religious patrons, thus giving the artists the freedom to develop independently of popular fashions.

It is best adapted to the rendering of still life, of landscape and of portraiture. But in these cases it is not advisable to aim at that solidity which is the virtue of oil-painting, if only because oil can bring about a better result.
