Tempera
The technique of painting with pigments bound in a water-soluble emulsion, such as water and egg yolk, or an oil-in-water emulsion such as oil and a whole egg. Some tempera paints are made with an artificial emulsion using gum or glue.
A tempera, or temper, is a medium used to bind a range of pigments. Tempers include egg yolk (tempera), gum arabic, oil and egg white. Temper(a) in historical artistic terms is not confined to egg yolk.
Egg Tempera is a painting medium and method, but painters sometimes have to put calligraphy and calligraphic ornaments in their pictures.
Egg tempera is the second oldest painting medium, dating back to the early Egyptians. While the advent of oil paints during the Renaissance made it technologically obsolete, it enjoyed renewed popularity as a medium in the late 18th century.
