Tenebrism is a style of painting in which light is used to focus attention on a single figure or particular figures in a composition, with the rest of the painting being in shadow and the background very dark.

Caravaggio is an Italian painter whose revolutionary technique of tenebrism, or dramatic, selective illumination of form out of deep shadow, became a hallmark of Baroque painting.
