Trial Proofs
The trial proofs are the most valuable proofs and do not form part of the edition. These proofs are used by the artist while he or she is conceptualizing the artwork and therefore show us the step by step how the print was created.

(Fr. fume) A type of trial proof taken from a wood block which has been blackened with smoke. It may be taken by the woodcutter to serve as a model for the printer.

Edition - Number of impressions pulled by or under the supervision of the artist, usually numbered and signed, excluding artist's proofs, trial proofs, and any others outside the edition.
