A vernissage is an invitation-only or private preview of an art exhibition before it opens for public viewing.
Vernissage A term used throughout France in the 19th century to describe a select audience of people who would be allowed to watch the artist applying finishing touches, such as varnish, to their works before exhibitions.
The term vernissage, in current usage, has almost nothing to do with "varnish," but everything to do with "the day before." Vernissage now refers to the private, pre-public, "invitation only" opening of a show.
vernissage - A private showing, preview, or opening of an art exhibition - an event marking the start of an exhibition. This word was used with increasing frequency in the United States in the last decade of the 20th century.
