volumetric - A quality of two-dimensional images characterized by a sense of three dimensions, solidity, volume, as contrasted with atmospheric, which is characterized more by a sense of space, or airiness, than with volume.

 


Inspired by the volumetric treatment of form by the French postimpressionist artist Paul Cezanne, Picasso and Georges Braque painted landscapes in 1908. Some of their paintings are so similar that many critics find it difficult to tell them apart.

During the mid-sixties American painting was declared dead by various critics including Minimalist sculptor/critic Donald Judd citing three-dimensional, volumetric objects as the embodiment of visual truth.

But Raphael exerts his own balancing capacity on the Leonardesque volumetric conception, infusing it with the idyllic serenity which characterizes his paintings from this period.

Rigid forms, typically of steel, against which metal is hammered to create volumetric forms in a process called "raising."
Stamping
The process whereby fabrics or other fiber art are decorated with rubber stamps or other objects and inks or dyes.
