The muscle atrophy found in older adults comes predominantly from a loss of fast twitch (FT) type II fibers which are recruited during high-intensity, anaerobic movements (e.g., weight lifting, sprinting, etc.).

As the process of aging can cause both muscle and bone atrophyexercise is vital to maintain and increase both muscle and bone mass and strength. After age thirty, men and women begin to lose bone strength and mass.

Specifically, moderate to high levels of myostatin may cause glucocorticoid muscle atrophy in healthy humans. In this specific study performed by Salehian et al (2) glutamine was found to prevent glucocorticoid induced muscle atrophy.

Fortunately the muscle will not atrophy either. So what you get is a situation where more and more of the work you put in at the gym simply goes towards maintenance of you muscle mass rather than increasing your muscle mass. Sound familiar?
