Get More Out Of Your Biceps Curls

Would you like to know how to get more out of every single dumbell curl you do? Amazingly enough, you can do this simply by changing where you grip the dumbell.

Biceps curls: there are many variations to this exercise: barbells (an EZ bar limits strain and puts your hands in a more natural position), dumbbells, incline bench, low cable pulley, etc.

Biceps Curls
Stand with your arms at your sides and your elbows tucked in. Once again, grab a medium sized object, and curl your biceps in towards your chest. When you reach your chest, lower the weight and repeat the process for 10-15 repetitions.

Sit leaning forward with your legs slightly spread and your left hand on your left thigh.
Place your right elbow on your right thigh, and hold the weight with your forearm horizontal.
Slowly curl the weight up and toward your chest.

So, if you are performing a set of biceps curls (ooh, did I say biceps curls in a football program?), for 4 sets of 12 and on the final set you begin to lose decent form on the 8th rep - simply stop.

Full range exercise movements are advantageous for strengthening the prime-mover, or agonist muscles--the muscles directly trained in the exercise, such as the biceps in the biceps curl.

Example: One set of biceps curls would include lifting and lowering dumbbells for 8-12 repetitions. To perform a second set, rest for 30-90 seconds and repeat the biceps curl exercise again.

Heel Dig on the step, biceps curl the arms. Do this for 8 counts.
Teach the entire routine and go through it a few times. Hold on the heel dig to stretch the hamstring, calves, hip flexors etc...

Many people make the mistake of doing a set of Bench Press for their chest, then a set of Biceps Curls, then another set of Bench Press, and then on to another muscle group, and so on. This does not fully target blood into any one muscle group.

For example, during the lifting phase of a biceps curl, the triceps muscles lengthen as the biceps contract. During the lowering phase, the opposite occurs and the biceps lengthen and become the antagonist.

Supersets usually involve several sets of two exercises for opposing muscle groups, such as the biceps curl and triceps dip. A compound set is a superset for the same muscle group (such as two back-to-back exercises for your biceps).

One does every rep very slow. For example, one takes rest for few seconds while performing biceps curl for the upward movement and takes 4 seconds for downward movement.

Agonist muscle- A muscle that is very effective in causing a certain joint movement. Also called the prime mover.On a biceps curl, the biceps is the agonist muscle that flexes the elbow joint.

Isolation Movement - An exercise that involves only one joint in the performance of the movement. Examples include cable crossovers, biceps curls and leg extensions.

However, Jim's biceps tendon attaches to his forearm farther from his elbow joint than John's does. This gives Jim a biomechanical advantage: he is able to lift more weight than John in biceps exercises such as the Biceps Curl.
