A) Cartilage Injuries and Disorders
1) Chondromalacia
Chondromalacia (pronounced KON-DRO-MAH-LAY-SHE-AH), also called chondromalacia patellae, refers to softening of the articular cartilage of the kneecap.

Cartilage is made up of living tissue that is continually broken down and replaced, and, in an ideal world, that process would take care of itself without any special effort on our part.

Cartilage Injuries
Sometimes a small piece of bone or cartilage softens or breaks off from the end of a bone, causing long-term knee pain. This is called osteochondritis dessicans (OCD).

Cartilage is a resilient material that absorbs shock and provides an elastic surface for smooth gliding of joints. Chondrocytes are embedded in the extracellular matrix comprised of type II collagen, proteoglycans and water.

Cartilage and Collagen
Refer to label instructions
[2 stars] Taking collagen hydrolysate may help relieve pain associated with osteoarthritis of the hip and knee.

Shark Cartilage
See Bovine cartilage.
Sodium
Also known as Salt. Regulates body fluid volume, transports amino acids to cells and plays a role in muscle contraction and nerve transmission.

Shark Cartilage - Contains mucopolysaccharides which may cause anti-angiogenic action that has been shown to be effective in preventing the formation of some solid tumors after extended use. May stimulate immune system functioning.

Bones and cartilage that make up the skeleton are the only rigid materials in the body. The 206 bones of the skeleton provide a framework and points of attachment for many of the soft tissues of the body.

Bones, joints, cartilage, and ligaments form the body’s structural support.

2. Damaging to cartilage. Repeated shock absorption (especially for heavier beginner runners) of the meniscus leads to increased degeneration and joint problems.

A practitioner uses a specialized staple gun to pierce a slightly protruding piece of cartilage just above and to the left of the tragus portion of the external ear.

Glucosamine is also a basic constituent of cartilage. Glucosamine is a natural sugar produced by the body and found in certain foods.

Clicking & popping of the TMJ joint caused by lack of cartilage at the rear hinge point.
Grinding sounds caused by irregular bone surface at rear hinge point.

Glucosamine and chondroitin are thought to provide the raw materials for building joint cartilage and may also exert an anti-inflammatory effect.

Collagen - A protein that is important in bones, cartilage, muscle, tendons, and blood vessels. The "gen" comes from the same root that means something that generates.

The traditional approach is to use a scalpel to cut cartilage inside the nose and reshape it manually. The surgical wounds have to be closed with stitches.

Other overuse sports injuries seen mostly in children include osteochondritis dissecans of the knee and ankle (repetitive grinding together of bones that causes damage to the growing surface cartilage and may result in pieces of dead bone and ...

Glucosamine is thought to stimulate the formation and repair of cartilage - which acts a little like a "cushion" for your joints. Chondroitin sulfate works a little differently. It helps to draw fluid into cartilage, which makes it more "elastic." ...

Essential for structure of bones, cartilage, muscle, and blood vessels. Helps maintain capillaries and gums, aids in the absorption of iron. Helps boost the immune system and is good for reducing muscle soreness after a workout.

Chondrocytes - Layers of cartilage which are the framework for bone formation.
Chylomicrons - A microscopic fat molecule in the blood that is formed during the digestion of fat.

Glucosamine and Condriotin - this supplement is used by many runners to help keep joints supple and cartilage at its best.

Ligament Strong, fibrous band of connecting tissue connecting two or more bones or cartilage or supporting a muscle, fascia or organ.
Lipids All fats and fatty acids.
Lipoprotein Fat carrying protein in the blood.

When the quads are out of balance with the hamstrings, there can be uneven and excessive wear and tear on the cartilage and ligaments of the knee.

Any of a class of extracellular proteins abundant in humans in the skin, bone, cartilage, tendon and teeth, forming strong insoluble fibers and serving as connective tissue between cells.

procedure: The neck measurement is taken immediately above the thyroid cartilage (the Adam's Apple). The subject should keep their head up and looking straight ahead.

Sometimes other knee ligaments or parts of the knee are also injured. This includes cartilage such as the menisci, or bones in the knee joint, which can be broken.

Ligament
A fibrous connective tissue that connects bone to bone or cartilage to bone, supporting and strengthening a joint.
