The Maximum Heart Rate Myth
You've probably been told that the best way to predict your maximal heart rate - the maximum number of times your heart can beat each minute - is to subtract your age from the number 220.

What is Target Heart Rate?
Each time you exercise, you should monitor the intensity of your activity to determine if the intensity at which you are working is adequate enough to promote cardiovascular fitness.

What I discovered is that there is no one magic number that fits all women for a safe maximum heart rate while working out when pregnant. There are many numbers and one of them will be just right for each individual.

A heart rate monitor is a device that permits a user to evaluate his or her heart rate in real time. Generally it consists of two elements: a chest strap transmitter and a wrist receiver (which commonly doubles as a watch).

So, if your heart rate increased with more than 10 sec. per a minute, compared to the levels when you weren't overtrained, that's a good sign that you start slipping into the overtraining state.

Your training heart rate is a critical element in exercise. Taking your pulse and figuring your heart rate during a workout is one of the primary indicators in ascertaining the intensity level at which you and your heart is working.

To measure your heart rate, take your pulse as soon as you stop exercising. Count your heartbeat for 10 seconds, then multiply that by six to convert it to a one-minute heart rate.

MONITORING THE HEART RATE:
Take the pulse either at the wrist (radial artery) or at the neck (carotid artery).
Use the first two fingers, not the thumb because it has it's own pulse.

MHR - Maximum heart rate. This is a theoretical number, which can be calculated from 220 minus one's age.

Cool-down - Slowing down at the end of a workout to allow your body temperature and heart rate to decrease gradually.
