Horsepower (hp) - A measure of power calculated by multiplying torque times speed and dividing by a constant based on the unit of measure used.

"Horsepower" is applied to two different ratings--"peak duty rating" and "continuous duty rating." The peak duty rating is advertised on a treadmill tag.

One horsepower exerted over an hour is equal to 641 Calories. So if you were to run up stairs at a rate of 550 foot-pounds of work every second for an hour, you would burn off 641 Calories.

Why so much extra horsepower for such a small amount of extra speed?
Aerodynamic drag increases exponentially with speed.

If you're buying a treadmill make sure the horsepower suits your needs. The 1.

First, look at the treadmill's motor size (measured in horsepower) to determine the machine's longevity.

The capacity of the treadmill motor is measured in horsepower. Treadmills that offer between 1.5 to 2.5 horsepower are best for home use.

Weight-bearing equipment that involves a little impact may build more bone and muscle strength in your legs, Florez says. Select a treadmill with a motor that has a minimum of 2.0 horsepower and with a belt that's at least 17 inches wide.
