Motor Unit Recruitment
A motor unit consist of a motor nerve cell (motoneurone) and the muscle fibers it innervates. muscles' ability to generate force is dependant up an interplay between motor unit recruitment and firing frequency.

 


Motor Unit
A motoneuron and all the muscle fibers it stimulates, innervates, or activates. The size of the motor unit is usually related to the degree of control required by the whole muscle.

The use of a motor unit is dependent on the threshold levels of its alpha motor neuron. The low threshold, slow twitch fibers are recruited for low intensity activities such as jogging (and for that matter, most tasks of human motion).

As trainees become more advanced, however, they gain the ability to better recruit the muscle fibers (motor units) as the nervous system improves it's neuromuscular coordination.

The underlying principle surrounding PAP is that prior heavy loading induces a high degree of central nervous system stimulation, resulting in greater motor unit recruitment and force, which can last from 5 to 30 minutes (Chiu et al.

The functional connection between the brain and the muscle is termed the "motor unit" (1). A motor unit consists of a motor neuron and the associated muscle fibers it innervates (2).

Even though most skeletal muscle is a mixture of all three types of skeletal, all the skeletal muscle fibres of any one motor unit are all the same.

Variety: "The more exercises you perform, the more motor units you will recruit, which will activate and build more muscle fibers and reduce the amount of atrophy (muscle deterioration and loss) that comes with aging and inactivity, ...

It has been found in many bodies of literature that during isometric muscle actions almost all motor units can be recruited. Why is this important to me? Do I just want to get big?

It improves strength - The motor units of the muscles are stimulated and prepared for a heavy workload.
It increases blood flow - Exercise-related problems are reduced by the increase in coronary blood flow.

The body fails to recruit the same number of motor units that it once could. Thus their is a net decrease in the amount of force that can be generated.
Decreases in speed followed by decreases of power.
