Overload Principle - This is the basic idea behind all workouts, i.e., that of continuing to add stress to a muscle as it gets stronger and/or has more endurance. The muscle grows stronger as a result.

Overload principle - Describes the importance of increasing the stress to the muscle in order to see increases in either muscular strength or endurance.

3. Overload
Always push yourself to improve on your last workout. Did you get eight reps at 100lbs last time? Try for nine today, or try to get eight reps at 105lbs. Always push yourself to get better.

The Overload Principle
Once you have decided what exercise activity you will perform to improve your cardiorespiratory fitness, you need to decide how long you will do it for, how often, and at what intensity level.

Overload: To see gains in strength you must always stimulate the muscle more than it is accustomed to.
Progression: The active muscle must continue to work against a gradually increasing resistance in order to meet overload.

Overload
Strength and endurance will increase only if muscles and the cardiovascular system are systematically subjected to workloads greater than those to which they are accustomed

Improvements in strength follow the overload principle. That is, to increase muscle strength the muscles need to be stressed with a load greater than normal. The muscles are thus stimulated to adapt to the increased load.
