Since I constantly talk about non-linear periodization in my articles, I thought I might as well write an article about it. Let me start off by saying that I was a HUGE HIT advocate for many, many years.

Periodization. Anybody can get results from their training. But making consistent improvements over long periods of time while avoiding overtraining is an exact science—and the Russians developed it first.

Periodization - The idea here is to avoid always using the same workload. One way to accomplish this is to set up a program of planned periodization.

Periodization Model (15 Week Macrocycle)
Phase I: Base Training (5 weeks- not represented here)
Phase II: Absolute Strength Training (5 weeks)
Phase III: Speed Strength Training (5 weeks) ...

Periodization - A method of organizing your training using periods of time or 'cycles' to focus on specific adaptations and goals.

Periodization - the changing of training intensity over a period of days, weeks and months.
Resistance Training - the use of weights to build lean muscle tissue.

Periodization:
Also called Cycle Training, a predetermined approach to strength and muscle building in which bodybuilders train light for several weels, then heavier, and then really heavy, and the process is cycled. Helps avoid injury and burnout.

Periodization - Weight training programs based on this philosophy approach progressive overload in a different way.

The workout uses "daily undulating periodization"—a fancy way of saying you do high reps using light weights, moderate reps with medium weights, and few reps of lifting heavy weights throughout the week, so your routine never gets stale.

Athletes in all sports use periodization to build themselves up to their best shape for competition. Is a pro football player in the same condition in March-April as he is in August-September? Not a chance.

The most effective way to add variety to your workouts is through periodization, which means making systematic changes to your training at regular intervals.

Varying your program (aka periodization) will help maximize fitness gains. Start your fitness year by focusing on aerobic development. Then, depending on your goals, work on speed.

I'd like to actually see a workout series with a lead that shows people how to squat, deadlift and overhead press correctly and how to set up a simple but reasonable periodization plan so that they could actually make some progress and look better.
