The vastus medialis muscle does the following:
Extends the leg at the knee.This means that the vastus medialis muscle straightens the leg at the knee joint such that there is an increase in the angle between the lower leg and the upper leg.

Increased risk of knee injury (chondromalacia) occurs during knee extension activities. The patella becomes laterally displaced with the pull of the vastus lateralis.

When the VMO or vastus medialis obliquus muscle (located in the inner part of the front thigh) is weak, the kneecap tends to be pulled to the outside. The can eventually lead to knee pain. Strengthening the VMO is one way to prevent knee pain.

quads, quadriceps the large muscle of the front of the thigh, composed of four heads: the vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius, vastus medialis, and rectus femoris.

The Quadriceps consist of rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius and vastus lateralis. These are the powerful extensors of the knee and are involved in running, lifting and even standing still.

Quads - Shortened form of "quadriceps", literally "four headed", located on the thigh. There is the "rectus femoris", "vastus intermedius", "vastus lateralis", and "vastus medialis".
