Accent plants that Jerry recommends include the Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae) which has a full, rounded form. Fishtail Palm (Caryota ochlandra) is a superb plant to grow in coastal Australia, from Sydney up to Cape York.

There are numerous varieties available, with showy blossoms in white, yellow, pink, red and purple/violet. They make an excellent accent plant in your garden or landscape and can be included in flower beds or borders.
Northern sea oats is a short grass that does well in shady areas. Its showy, drooping flowers and bamboo-like foliage make it a great accent plant for the garden.
Silver Mound Artemisia forms a low growing, 12-24" mound of fragrant, fern-like, silvery grey foliage. The flowers that appear in mid summer are tiny and insignificant. Excellent accent plant for borders and rock gardens

Arundo donax 'Versicolor' ...
Red twig dogwood, also known as Tatarian dogwood, is a longtime favorite. It has unique red stems that make a nice backdrop to overwintering perennials or an accent plant with evergreens.
Spreading shrubs can make high walls appear lower, rounded forms are perfect for a formal look or accent plant. Erect forms work well for blocking unwanted views or adjacent tall structures.
Bold clumps in mass plantings are an excellent alternative to agapanthus to line a sweeping driveway, whilst single daylilies work beautifully as accent plants in cottage garden beds and borders or as 'stand alone' specimen plants.
Don't forget Dark Opal Basil which not only stands up as a culinary herb but also works well as a decorative accent plant.
