ACID RAIN - Rainwater that contains sulfur dioxide and other pollutants from industrial plants. There has been considerable damage done to the forests of the US and Canada.

Acid rain-Rain containing droplets of nitric acid and sulfuric acid, formed when water molecules combine with gases such as sulfur dioxide (SO2) or nitrogen oxides (NOx)in the atmosphere and fall to Earth.

Rain water is almost always acidic and is one of the larger contributors to a negative PH (remember "Acid Rain"? Well, it hasn't gone away). 2) Pine Straw.

Sulfur (S) - Part of protein, amino acids, vitamins; important in respiration. Symptoms are a general yellowing of the affected leaves of the entire plant. In Virginia, acid rain discharges 10 pounds of sulfur per acre to the soil each year.

Sulfur (13%) is crucial to the inner workings of plants, but it is almost never lacking in the soil, thanks in part to synthetic fertilizers and acid rain.

The students devise a system devoid of phosphorus to see firsthand what a plant hungry for phosphorus looks like. They then conduct research to determine what type of pollutant"acid rain being one"creates this result in the natural world.

Limestone will raise pH, and aluminum sulfate will lower pH. In many parts of the country, acid rain has lowered the pH of the soil, so chances are you'll have to apply lime rather than a product to lower pH.
