Acid soils have pH readings less than about pH6.5. Acid conditions are preferred by lime-hating (ericaceous or calcifuge) plants.

Aeration
Loosening or puncturing the soil by mechanical means to increase water penetration and air permeability is called aeration.
Use an acid soil or acid fertilizer. Feed every 14 days during active growth. Wash leaves monthly. Prune ruthlessly to control size. Propagate easily by seed anytime or with difficulty from stem cuttings taken from firm, new growth in spring.

Being tolerant of heat it is also cold resistant. Severe freezing will kill it though. Acid soils are not good for them. Get your soil test and the compost and mulch working to get your soil more toward the alkaline scale.
