On top of the drainage layer, it is a good idea to spread a thin layer of activated charcoal, like you would use in your aquarium filter.
This layer will help to clean the air of the fumes caused when the organic materials begin to decompose.

Check your first aid-kit for activated charcoal. Available at pharmacies without prescription, activated charcoal is administered to absorb a wide range of toxins.

Place some activated charcoal in the bottom of a glass and fill it with water. Cover the glass with waxed paper or plastic wrap, and fasten with a rubber band. Punch holes in the covering, and insert leaves.

Dust ends with fungicide or activated charcoal. Allow to dry several hours. Lay horizontally with about half of the cutting below the media surface, eye facing upward.

Drink a large quantity of water mixed with 6 to 8 heaping teaspoons of activated charcoal. See a physician immediately. Do not spray with winds greater than 15 miles an hour or that are gusting. If Teflan contaminates water, it can kill fish.

She uses a combination potting mix of Douglas fir bark, giant perlite and activated charcoal. And don’t be afraid of hurting the plant while you’re repotting it. Orchids are tougher than they look.
