Aerators may be rented at many garden or rental centers. Some lawn or landscape companies will perform the service for a fee. Be sure that the machine has hollow tines or spoons to bring the soil core to the surface.

Rental centers have lawn aerators available. If the area is small you can aerate by hand with a garden fork. The prongs should be inserted every four to six inches. The fork can be rocked back and forth to increase the hole size.
There are composters, recyclers and scavengers that eat dead animals or fruit that has fallen out of trees, pollinators like butterflies and bees, soil aerators such as worms and defoliators like caterpillars, which are vital to the ecosystem.
