after-ripening
1. Metabolic changes that must take place in a seed to overcome dormancy. 2. The dormancy period following seed formation, necessary for embryo changes that insure germination.

after-ripening The seed maturation process that must be completed before germination can occur.
aggergate fruit A group of small fruits derived from several ovaries within a single flower.
It is important to cut the seed stalk at the base at the end of December, put the seed stalks in a hessian bag and store them in a cool, dry place for a year. There is a long after-ripening period with the seed.
