alba) is grown for its large, sweet-scented, white flowers, which unfurl at dusk to reveal saucer-like, 6 in (15.2 cm) wide blossoms. This rapid grower can climb to 10 ft (3 m) in a growing season and reach 40 ft (12.2 m) in frost-free areas.

White Oak (Quercus alba)
White Oak is a large, stately tree with a round to wide spreading crown, growing 50-70 ft. in height, and 40-80 ft in width. It is hardy to zone 3b.

A wonderfully rewarding trick is to plant morning glories together with their cousin, the moon vine (Ipomoea alba), whose large white flowers open late in the day.
Campanula rotundifolia 'alba' would therefore describe a plant with white, bell shape flowers, and round leaves.
It would be extremely difficult, if not impossible for an average gardener to memorize all of the root words for botanical names.
Variegated Daphne burkwoodii 'Carol Mackie' is beautiful throughout the year, but glows in winter light in a partially shady spot it shares with a diminutive Daphne cneorum 'Pygmaea Alba', whose fragrance scents the air in early spring.

The twining stems of morning glories cover an arbor or fence with masses of heart-shaped leaves and beautiful flowers, each of which lasts for one day.
Another member of the morning glory family that has become a popular vine is the moonflower, Ipomoea alba. Unlike other morning glories which open early in the day and are often closed by evenings, moonflowers don't begin their show until evening.

The other variety which is particularly lovely is the white form 'Alba'. This form has luxuriously thick and velvety petals in sparkling white that add light and life to any Winter garden display. 'Alba' is available now through our Spring catalogue.
Lamb's Quarter (Chenopodium alba and related species, e.g. Chenopodium quinoa)
Young leaves in salads. Older leaves and tender stalks cooked. Leaves dried and ground into flour (replaces up to half the flour in any recipe).
Dwarfs for edging include Nana Alba. This variety grows to one foot and has gray foliage and white flowers. Munstead, the most popular compact lavender, dependably develops lavender blue flowers a month earlier than other varieties.
Some shrubs, such as the coloured-bark dogwoods (Cornus alba and C. stolonifera varieties), Kerria japonica, Rhus typhina and a number of trees, produce suckers from the base of the plant or along the roots.
Cultivar names are printed with a capital letter and in single quotation marks, e.g. 'Alba' is the cultivar name in Veronica longifolia 'Alba'. The abbreviation for cultivar is cv. In everyday parlance, cultivars are often called varieties.

The Romans and Greeks created the basis for plant naming by describing a particular characteristic or use of a plant, for example erectus meaning upright, pendula meaning hanging, purpurea for purple, alba for white etc.
Another vine worth mentioning is Moon Vine (Ipomoea alba) which produces heart-shaped-leaves and large fragrant white flowers.
Augustifoila 'alba' has white flowers and grows between 40-60cam. L. Angusifolia 'Hidcote' makes a nice border plant or pot specimen with dark purple flowers and should be pruned to keep it in a compact round shape.
