Alkaline soil
Alkaline soils have pH readings above pH7.4 and contain relatively more lime. Alkaline soil suits lime-loving (calcicole) plants such as many alpines and many vegetables, especially brassicas (cabbage family).

A very alkaline soil, with pH above 7.5, needs drastic treatment. Once you've used sulfur to adjust pH initially, provide long-lasting acidity as well as humus by mixing a generous bucketful of peat moss into the soil at each planting hole.
Wood ash is highly alkaline and may help to neutralize acidic soil but would not be recommended for use on alkaline soils. A generally safe rate of application would be 4-8 oz. per sq. yard of bed space.

IRON CHELATE: A form of iron readily absorbed by plants, especially in alkaline soils.
Most garden plants will thrive in neutral soil, rhododendrons and heathers prefer a lower pH (acid) soil, whilst peonies and irises will tolerate an alkaline soil.
