Amending soil: To improve the soil usually by adding organic matter.
Annuals: Plants that live one year or less.
Axils: The angle or upper side where the leaf is attached to the stem.

Amending soil is important, if shade is cast by buildings or trees. Concrete foundations can contribute to dry, alkaline soils, and trees, especially those with shallow, fibrous roots, deplete the soil of moisture and nutrients.

A garden fork is useful for turning and amending soil, as well as for lifting perennials. A leaf rake is necessary for fall clean up, while a metal rake is great for leveling the ground.

If your garden is heavy clay or very sandy, you may need to add a lot of compost to make it easy to work with. Heavily amending soil with compost is never a mistake.

They can often be avoided by siting plants in an area with good air circulation, pruning plants to allow sun and air to circulate to inner branches, and planting in soil that is naturally well drained, amending soil with compost to improve drainage, ...

Green manure crops should be turned just before flowering. However, it is also acceptable to wait until the crop has died off. Since green manure crops grow quickly, they make an ideal choice for amending soil prior to spring planting.

In my mind there is no better way to change the soil in your garden than mulching; not raining fertilizer and chemicals upon it, not amending soil, and no, especially not plowing, tilling, or cultivating.
