Several of the Mediterranean lupines are widely cultivated for animal feed because lupine seeds contain the full range of essential amino acids and can be grown in cooler climates than soy, the commonly planted feed crop.

Below ground, plant roots release amino acids, vitamins, sugars, tannins, alkaloids, phosphatides, and glucosides into the soil, affecting plants either positively or negatively, resulting in plant health, or disease.

Nutritionally, it's similar to soybeans and especially prized for its concentration of lysine, a necessary amino acid that's scarce in most grains.

Sulfur (S) - Part of protein, amino acids, vitamins; important in respiration. Symptoms are a general yellowing of the affected leaves of the entire plant. In Virginia, acid rain discharges 10 pounds of sulfur per acre to the soil each year.
