ARBORIST - A specialist who cares and maintains trees. Everything from planting, to pruning and also diagnosing and treating diseases.

Arborists learn more about trees all the time. We used to tell you to make pruning cuts flush with the trunk. Now we recommend making the cut just beyond the branch collar -- the wrinkled or somewhat swollen area at the base of a branch.

An arborist is a trained professional who makes an assessment of a tree based on their knowledge and experience balancing the needs of tree against the needs of the public or private citizen.

11. Good arborists do not use climbing spikes if the tree is to remain in your landscape. They also rarely recommend "topping" a tree -- removing major limbs from the crown -- as this practice is extremely disfiguring and weakens the tree.

Management strategies: Select the right plant for existing growing conditions and provide proper care to keep it healthy and borer-resistant. Prune out dead branches and stems. If a borer attacks, consult a certified arborist.

Rather the tree, eventually, will grow around the hooks and they will become buried in the bark. If yours is a major pruning and cabling job, however, it may be a good idea to consult a commercial arborist.
