Aster yellows is a disease that is most often transmitted through insects or poor growing conditions, making plants more susceptible. Flowers become distorted, turn green in color, exhibit stunted growth, and may even die.

Some goldenrod varieties can fail quickly if smitten by aster yellows, a disease carried by leafhoppers that causes plants to appear yellowish and stunted. Dig and destroy any affected plants.

Diseases: Gaillardia x grandiflora are usually problem free, but they are susceptible to aster yellows, a virus-like disease that can stunt their growth and cause the flowers to be green.

Though most newer China asters are wilt resistant, you should change their location each year to prevent aster yellows, a disease that stunts plants and turns flowers a sickly chartreuse. Cut when flowers are half-open; recut stems underwater.

Dark, yellow-bordered spots on leaves signal fungal leaf blight. Stunted, light yellow leaves and woody roots with tufts of white side roots are signs of aster yellows.
