Lateral bud A bud borne in the axil of a leaf or branch; not terminal. Latex Milky sap which exudes from cut surfaces of a few house plants, such as Ficus elastica decora and Euphorbia.

Each sprout grows in the leaf axil or joint. They begin maturing from the bottom of the plant upwards. You can start harvesting when the lower sprouts reach the size of large marbles.

New stems will grow from the axil of the topmost set of remaining leaves, so flower stems should be cut on an angle, and about 1/4-inch above the leaves that will remain on the cane.

Eggs are laid on the needles and the newly hatched larva constructs a small silken web in the axil formed by a needle and the stem. The larvae feed for a few days on the base of the needles and on the surface of the stem.

The eye refers to the bud which emerges at the axil of the leaf at each node. This is used for plants with alternate leaves when space or stock material are limited. Cut the stem about 1/2 inch above and 1/2 inch below a node.

2. Using sterile, sharp shears, cut just above a leaf axil. Note: A quick way to sterilize your cutting shears is to dip the blades in rubbing alcohol.
3.Remove the leaves along the base of the stem.
4. Make a diagonal cut at the base of the stem.

A modified thickened stem that lies horizontally atop the soil, partially beneath or completely underground, bearing scale-like leaves with nascent buds at each axil.

Group two blooms in early summer, with flowers forming on short stems that grow from the previous season's leaf axil buds. In early spring it should be cut back to a pair of strong buds on all stems.
