Balled and Burlapped
Sometimes abbreviated BB or B&B, balled and burlapped shrubs and trees are sold by some nurseries from late fall to early spring.

Balled and burlapped. B&ampB saplings are older, larger trees dug from a commercial nursery. The trees are wrapped in burlap and usually kept in the nursery for a period of time giving the roots the opportunity to regenerate.

Balled and burlapped trees and shrubs are dug either from a nursery field or from the wild. Those dug from the wild are called collected stock.

For balled and burlapped trees, cut any rope tied around the trunk and pull the burlap away. Cut any reinforcement wire, removing as much as possible, but be sure the rootball stays intact.

How to Plant Balled and Burlapped Trees and Shrubs
One of the best ways to landscape a yard quickly is by planting balled and burlapped trees and shrubs.

It's best to plant balled and burlapped plant material in late fall to early winter.

The soils in which balled and burlapped and containerized plants have grown are often radically different than the soils into which they are planted in the home landscape.

If they are balled and burlapped, open the top of the burlap after the plant is placed in the hole. Plants will establish more quickly on sandy soils if a shovelful of acid peat is mixed in each planting hole.

Closely inspect the wrapping around root balls of B&B (balled and burlapped) trees and shrubs. Growers use many synthetic materials, as well as burlap treated to retard degradation, to wrap root balls. Many of these materials will not degrade.

It can be propagated by grafting but is often sold balled and burlapped or in containers. It needs full sun to fully fruit, though it will tolerate partial shade.

Nursery-bought trees will be either in containers or balled and burlapped. Look for trees with branches arranged symmetrically around the trunk and without broken or diseased limbs.

Before planting it is not necessary to amend the soil. Trees and shrubs come balled and burlapped, potted, or bare root.

Nurseries which grow tree seedlings in the ground will root prune the seedlings the year before they are dug and balled and burlapped.
