Next on my list is bark mulch, and this is the stuff the grand majority of us use and with good reason. It's reasonably cheap, readily available, and we're pretty used to seeing it around.

 


Tree bark mulch in the southeast is usually pine bark. Pine bark has a nugget look. Pine bark lasts longer than other types of tree bark mulch because of the size of the nuggets.

Bark mulch acts as both decorative and protective insulation for the winter months for bulbs that aren't lifted. Because the bark uses nitrogen as it decays and blocks sunlight, it actively suppresses weed growth in the bed as well.

The advantages of using organic mulch to blanket soil around trees, shrubs, and perennial plants are many: Mulch moderates soil temperature and makes a more favorable environment for roots.

Over time, organic mulches such as composted bark mulches also provide important organic matter for the soil and can help control diseases by encouraging microorganisms that may act as biological controls of plant pathogens.

The best option is to add a four inch layer of chipped bark mulch below the canopy of the tree. Do not add more than four inches and leave space around the trunk.
