Base Dressing: Fertiliser or compost put on or dug in to the soil before planting or sowing. Bedding Plants: Plants grown to almost full size and then planted out usually in summer to make colourful displays.
Fertiliser applied to the soil and worked in prior to sowing or planting is called base dressing. Vegetables are hungry crops and will thrive if given a slow-release fertiliser two or three times a year.
Time the application of manures, organic mulches or fertilizers so plants gain maximum benefit, applying them either just as growth starts as a base dressing, or part-way through the growing cycle as a top dressing.
